Caruma by Eneida Tavares is a series of one-of-kind vases and containers combining the traditional craft techniques of Angolan basket weaving and ceramics. The pieces, made from hand-picked pine needles from the forests of Caldas da Rainha – hence the name Caruma, which means pine needle in Portuguese – blend the two techniques together seamlessly. The needles are woven directly onto the traditional earthenware bases to create pieces that speak of the ‘intercultural dialogue’ between two construction methods.
