The Metamorphosis Series – The Eggs by Shi Shaoping

The Metamorphosis Series – The Eggs is a large scale installation series by Chinese artist Shi Shaoping. Shaoping spent one year firing 3,000 solid ceramic eggs and then displaying them in some of China’s most desolate landscapes. Each egg weighs one kilogram and the total sum for the thousand of sculptures equating to 48-tons. Landscapes covered included the rugged Beihai coast, Yardang landforms, the black Gobi, sand dunes of Dunhuang, and the Gannan grassland. Along with a team of workers, Shaoping carefully positioned each individual piece, taking into account the characteristics of each setting, and adapting the large-scale arrangement to each geographical location.
